How do you deal with trash talk and toxic players?
- Communicate at all times.
- Know your role.
- Pay close attention to your teammates.
- Focus on your objective.
Compared to the years before, it’s much easier to get your hands on video games today.
Unlike the previous decades when video games were only accessible if you had a gaming device, the smart device era we currently live in provides everyone an access to a huge library of video games, as well as a chance to be part of the growing online gaming community.
That said, the community is filled to the brim with all kinds of players. Some are helpful to other players, while the others are people whom the community would be better off without, to say the least.
In any case, everyone has the right to play video games if they please. You can report bad players as much as you can, but there will always be new players every day, and the fact is that not all of them will have a likable character.
Toxic players are something that the online gaming community will never run out of. In fact, the gaming community isn’t what it is without these players. Sooner or later, all players—including you—will have to learn how to deal with them. Continue reading to find out how.
Communicate at All Times
In a team game, it isn’t about which team has more individually skilled players. It’s about devising a brilliant strategy and edging your opponents in as many aspects as you can. Communication between teammates is the key to pulling this off.
Your teammates will always assume that you’re always sticking to your game plan. Some will be kind enough to calmly remind you if you’re straying too far from it, while others will immediately get enraged and throw a barrage of curses at you. To avoid this, always communicate.
A teammate may be initially pleasant to play with, but you never really know—some people undergo personality changes depending on the situation they are in. Sometimes, an extremely toxic player is enough to ruin the mood and lose the match. Never forget to let your teammates know if you’re going to execute a different tactic, or if you have to leave the game.
Know Your Role
Every member has a specific role on the team. Each and every one must know what theirs is, and they must be able to fully deliver. At times, the performance of one player can be the difference between victory and defeat.
Toxic players tend to be extra hateful towards players who don’t know what they are doing. If you have been doing nothing but running around the map while your comrades are battling their heart out, you might as well prepare yourself for a verbal assault.
There is always a reason why toxic players are the way they are. Sometimes, it’s just who they are; other times, they are given a reason to act in that manner. In any case, be a good teammate, for both your team and your sake.
Pay Close Attention to Your Teammates
Pulling off a brilliant strategy isn’t an easy task. Every member of the team is important, and if even just one of them messes up, the team’s success can be placed in jeopardy. Sure, it may not be you, but that doesn’t mean that you’ll be free from criticism.
A simple equation, for example. Imagine a teammate nearby who is close to death, being pursued by an enemy with just a bit more health. Instead of going after the enemy you could have easily taken out, you proceed to continue farming for resources instead. Teammate is killed, and the enemy successfully retreats. Put all of those together, and what do you get? This:
“What the #^@&, man?! You could’ve helped me, you #^@&!%? noob!”
And a string of senseless curses follows. Nobody wants that, and it’s going to hurt more if you know they have a point. Always maintain a high level of awareness for your teammates, and adapt to the situation if needed.
Focus on Your Objective
Even if you play the game properly, there is still a chance that you might encounter a toxic player who trash-talks just to distract you, and because it’s the only thing he’s good at. In this case, ignore.
Keep your focus on your goal at all times. Only communicate when necessary, and don’t pay any attention to players who are trying to get into your head. By losing your cool, you will be adding insult to injury—you have not only cost your team the game, you have also let the person who was messing with you win. Ignorance is bliss, and in the online gaming community, it’s a pretty nice piece of weapon to have.
The online gaming community is home to millions of players all around the world, each of which has unique personalities. Toxic players are a part of the bunch—they were, they are, and they will always be a constant in the gaming world.
There isn’t much you can do to change the way they are, so the best approach is to learn how to deal with them, and not let them affect the way you play.
